Labour in labour

Re-inventing the Malta Labour Party (and Maltese politics): an unauthorised tazebao.

Identity and social democratic values

Posted by fcb on April 5, 2008

Dr. Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, or as many of us more familiarly know her, Marie Louise, has made it a point to emphasise that she has served the Labour Party for 34 years. She is best known to Labour’s older rank and file as the Party’s general secretary, a post she held for nine consecutive years between 1982 and 1991. “I want to be the leader of a Labour team which unites the Labour Party with a vision built on identity and social democratic values,” Ms Coleiro Preca told the media as she announced her intention to join the race for the Party’s top post, bringing the number of confirmed contestants to four.

Marie Louise’s reference to Labour’s identity and its social democratic values should not be left at that. Let’s take the opportunity to reflect on this identity and these values. What are they, indeed? Should they be taken as sacred and given, constant and unchanging or should they be constantly modified to reflect (at least the structural) changes in the society within which the Labour Party operates? Is this ‘identity’ to reflect the interests of particular socio-economic groups, even if broadly outlined – say, the Country’s working people – or should the Labour Party altogether abandon its preferential commitment to those whose income and way of life depend principally not on whatever capital they may own but on the labour they sell to others?

The person Labour will choose to lead it must be one with the intellectual competences necessary to confront these issues fearlessly, and to draw politically effective conclusions from this exercise. This is not an exercise that can be accomplished once for all in the quiet solitude of one’s study. It is not an exercise that can be taken over by marketing and media executives, be they homespun amateurs or outsourced professionals. Nor is it an exercise that can be accomplished in a month, or a year or even a legislature. Indeed it is not ‘an exercise’ at all. We are speaking about a complex generational task that can only be accomplished by someone capable of inspiring a new generation of citizens…because it will not take less than a generation to accomplish.

It is a daunting mission. It is not made any easier by the fact that the 141888 electors who voted for the Malta Labour Party on March 8, 2008, and almost certainly a modest but electorally not insignificant number of the 143468 who voted for the Nationalist Party, expect the opposition party to do its best to replace this government – one that was born old and weighed down by shameful compromises with those very elements that took it to the edge of defeat – with a new and healthy administration as soon as possible and at any rate by not later than 2013. Labour’s new leader will have the unenviable task of having to undertake a long term overhaul of the vehicle he will be entrusted to drive, whilst driving it at the highest possible speed towards victory at the next elections.
